Hypnotherapy

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis for life change.  Hypnosis is defined as an altered state of consciousness featuring "selective perception," a process in which the subject (who is always in control) has a heightened susceptibility to receiving beneficial suggestions.

Hypnosis involves guided concentration and is a means of communication between the conscious and the subconscious mind.  The conscious mind deals with reasoning and logic, decisions, goal planning, and conscious activity.  The subconscious mind, however, may wield the greatest influence.  It receives all messages from our social, spiritual, and genetic backgrounds and all the conflicts and disturbances which enter our consciousness each day.  It is responsible for our "fight or flight" tendencies.  Many human problems, habits, stresses, anxieties, attitudes, or apparent deficiencies can be traced to interpretations by the subconscious mind which is the seat of all memory.  Traumatic events can be buried or suppressed in the subconscious.

A major benefit of hypnotherapy. . .

A major benefit of hypnotherapy is its ability to uncover and bring into the light of understanding the buried information or experience which may be the cause or root of a troublesome disorder or dysfunction (e.g., stress, fears, overeating).  Hypnosis is rapidly emerging as a highly effective tool that can be very beneficial as a therapy in itself.

Hypnotherapy allows you to influence your subconscious mind for positive change.

What hypnosis is not. . .

Hypnosis is not a form of sleep or an unconscious state.  In most cases, the subject is fully aware of communication and is able to respond on request either verbally or by signal.  There is no surrender of mind or control.  A person cannot be hypnotized to do or say anything which violates personal standards of behavior or integrity.

What will you experience in a session?

As your hypnotherapist, Cynthia will discuss your interests and desires for change to determine what method of hypnotherapy might best serve you.  A first session is generally 1.5 or 2 hours in length.  You will be asked to sit or lie down in a completely comfortable position, and you will be taken through a deep relaxation exercise that will lead you into a hypnotic state.  From there, Cynthia will use designed material to work with your subconscious mind to get at the heart of behaviors and to help you to redirect ideas to make lasting changes.  Because the mind creates the results (behaviors, what we manifest, etc.), working with the subconscious is a key to creating change in your life.  When appropriate, a session will be taped so that you will leave with a tape that you can listen to in order to reinforce the positive change.

Cynthia's office setting is designed to allow you to feel safe and comfortable.
